Greetings:
National Hispanic/Latino
Heritage Month begins September 15 -- the anniversary of independence
for five
Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and
Nicaragua.
The month also includes the independence days of Mexico on September 16, Chile on September
18, and Belize on September 21, and continues with El Día de la Raza on October 12.
Additionally, October brings Filipino American History Month -- the Philippines sharing much Hispanic heritage.
As of July 1, 2008, an estimated
46.9 million people in the United States identify as Hispanic or
Latino -- 15 percent of the U.S. population. Furthermore, Puerto Rico has approximately 4
million residents.
For 2009, the theme for National Hispanic/Latino
Heritage Month is:
"Embracing the Fierce Urgency of Now!"
Now is a wonderful
time to start planning your own celebration honoring our nation's Hispanic/Latino
